This project had a driveway that consisted of concrete strips and grass in-between with an awkward set of 8" high entry steps that was a nightmare to negotiate around the car and up the steps with a bag of groceries. Furthermore, the rear yard was cut off by a hill making it difficult for guests to enter they would without having to negotiate the steps and entering through the house. The solution is an elegant entry that is "warm and welcoming.” We expanded the driveway area and connected the home with a wide walkway leading to a set of 6" high steps and comfortable landings that wrap around planters eliminating the need for railings the generous size landings give the user respite between the short sets of stairs. This entrance also settles the front of the house into the landscape giving it a softer look. Furthermore, we excavated the hillside on the left side of the house and balanced it off with a walkway retaining wall and entry steps into the rear yard. creating true form following function design. Another bonus benefit of this design is the walkways actually expand the driveway and give a step-off area when you open the doors of the car.
